Farmers Against Fracking rally at KM8 site

Over 100 people came to the gates of Kirby Misperton fracking site to show their support for the rally of Farmers Against Fracking.    One of the organisers was Matthew Trevelyan, a father to two young children and a sheep farmer from the North York Moors.

He addressed the crowd saying

“Fracking isn’t just an environmental issue – it’s a livestock issue.

It’s a food issue. It’s a livelihood issue.”

Green Leaders Caroline Lucas And Jonathan Bartley Join Protesters

Green Party chiefs Caroline Lucas and Jonathan Bartley spent an afternoon with fracking protesters.

The co-leaders visited a shale gas “exploration” site near Preston New Road, Lancashire, which environmental campaigners have been blockading for months on end after accusing the government of “failing to listen to residents”, leading to a number of arrests.

Fracking firm Cuadrilla moved specialist equipment into the area in July, after a local council decision to refuse them permission to drill for gas was overturned by the High Court.

GREEN MONDAYS AND NEWS

All

We received this notice from Allan Todd, of the Green Party, about
future events they are hosting at the Preston New Road site. This Monday the 18th. both Caroline Lucas and Jonathan Bartley will be speaking with others.

Yesterday we had a deliberately ‘low key’ visit from John McDonnell, the Shadow Chancellor. He spent two hours just listening to our concerns about the impacts of fracking on communities and reconfirmed Labour’s  intention to ban fracking and support us all. He will be raising in parliament and discussing with his colleagues. Lots of info on the RAG FB page including a short video of his speech.

They really need numbers down there on Monday and the other key dates.

Also every Saturday, meeting at 10.30 at Maple Farm,  we are canvassing residents in Kirkham and Wesham. We need volunteers to help raise awareness. It is amazing just how many people are opposed. Just turn up any Saturday if you can spare a couple of hours.

RAG

Hi, all
Here are the latest updates regarding the above. This week’s ‘Green
Monday’, on 11 Sept., attracted about 20 protesters – this drop was
mainly down to the fact that 30 protesters were in court that day!
However, despite the intermittently-awful weather, the newly-formed Little Plumpton Ramblers were able to persuade about 8 members to take part in a bracing up-and-down walk in front of the gates – until extra police were drafted in to explain how we were a ‘distraction’ to other road users!

UPDATE: Green Monday 18 September (ie. NEXT Monday):

As well as Caroline Lucas (Green Party Co-Leader and MP) and  Stephen Hall (President of Greater Manchester Assoc. of TUs, & Chair of Unite the Union/GM Area Activists’ Cttee), other speakers will also be taking part now:

* Simon Pickering (Ecotricity’s Chief Ecologist)
* Jonathan Bartley (Green Party Co-Leader), who is coming along again, IN ADDITION to his visit on 2 Oct. (see below).

Forthcoming ‘Green Mondays’ & other protest days at PNR:

As well as next Monday, and the on-going daily protests at PNR, there are also the following ‘specials’:
1. Green Monday 25 September: Jenny Jones (Green Party member of House
of Lords) and Barbara Richardson (Frack Free Lancs) will be the main speakers.
2. Friday 29 September: Stephen Hall & Ian Hodson (President of the Bakers’, Food & Allied Workers’ Union – the first union to come out against fracking) are organising what should be a ‘big NW TU
mobilisation’ on that day (Ian Hodson actually lives in Blackpool &
pushes hard for climate jobs in the ‘Blackpool Deserves Better’
campaign). There will also be a speaker from Friends of the Earth,
Northern Ireland, who’ll be talking about their SUCCESSFUL campaign against fracking there.

3. Monday 2 October: Jonathan Bartley (Green Party Co-Leader) will be the main speaker for that day.

4. Wednesday 4 October: Churches Together will be staging an event (which has been organised by Bob Turner) at the PNR gates. There may also be something else taking place on that day (!) – so it’s another date for your diary.

5. Monday 9 October: No ‘name’ speaker, so far – but it looks like there may well be several different Greenpeace groups coming, including supporters from Manchester, Preston, Liverpool – and some from London who are thinking of staying over for a couple of days after.

More Anti-fracking news:

1. UN Report on pollution

Cuadrilla’s fracking site at Preston New Road

In case you missed it, a recent UN Report on Pollution has accused the UK government of ‘flouting’ its duty to protect its citizens from
illegal & dangerous levels of air pollution. Although the report centres on traffic pollution, it also refers to fracking – & the UN rapporteur specifically mentioned problems in Lancashire! The report also stated that protection from pollution is a human right, & pointed out how the weak regulations currently in place as regards fracking also increased the risk of water pollution. Exactly what protesters at PNR have been saying from Day One! The link below gives more details:

2. TUC Motion on Climate Change and Renewable Energy

Something else you may have missed is that the TUC has just passed a Motion which points out the growing dangers of climate change and which, among other things, calls for moves away from fossil fuels in order to reduce carbon emissions, and the need to campaign for pension funds to disinvest from fossil fuel companies. A link is pasted below:

THESE DEVELOPMENTS , COMING ON TOP OF THE RECENT POSITIVE NEWS FROM  AUSTRALIA AND OTHER COUNTRIES – CONFIRM THAT THIS IS A STRUGGLE WE CAN WIN HERE,  AT PRESTON NEW ROAD.

As stated previously, it really IS all about numbers – the MINIMUM
number of protesters needed to slow/prevent deliveries, etc., is 80 –
ideally, we need 100+.

SO… JUST KEEP TURNING UP – AND BRING MORE FRIENDS WITH YOU!

All the best
