97%+ rejected government plans to fast-track fracking

The government has revealed there was overwhelming opposition to its plans – now shelved – to speed up development of the shale gas industry.

Results of a public consultation published this morning show that 97.5% opposed a proposal to class exploratory drilling for shale gas as permitted development, avoiding the need for a full planning application.

98% opposed a parallel idea to treat major fracking production sites as National Significant Infrastructure Projects, bypassing decisions by councils. Only 1% of participants supported this proposal.
