Tory Councillors blast their own Government’s bid to bypass local opposition to fracking

Tory plans to bypass local opposition to fracking are today blasted by the party’s own councillors.

Ministers have launched a consultation on whether non-hydraulic fracturing in shale gas exploration should be treated as “permitted development” – meaning energy firms would not have to apply for planning permission.  A poll of 507 Conservative Councillors in areas where fracking companies have a licence to drill for gas found 80% believe planning applications should be required before drilling can start.
